JD LX277 mower won't engage

I have a 2001 model JD LX277. Last season when I stored the mower everything worked fine. Today the engine starts and runs fine. It travels ok in forward and reverse. When I pull up the knob to engage the mower nothing happens. Any advice on what the problem could be?
