Is there a trick to getting head bolts out???

I have a 16 HP B&S which needs rebuilding and I want to ensure that I don't snap the head bolts off when I disassemble the beast. Is there any tricks to getting these out intact? Someone told me to tap them with a hammer before talking them out. Someone else told me to use an impact wrench while another told me not to use the imapct wrench.
Any suggestions??
