Black smoke usually indicates a rich/overly rich fuel condition, same can be caused by 1 or more of the following-idle stop & idle needle misadjusted, incorrect float level, dirt in float needle seat, worn float needle/seat & same leaking, plugged bowl vent or air bleeds, all of these will cause eng to run rough/hunt for it's speed & lose power,if you don't have a service manual for eng,you might want to goto www.kohlerengines.com & download(free) a service/repair manual for your eng, fuel system covered in section 5 of same.
