look in the cavity under your tilting seat - find the model number and serial number. Go to the MTD website - hunt down an owner's manual and - if possible - a service manual.
Study them for how the tranny's control linkage is set up - then chk your tractor to see if anything is awry in your linkage. Chances sre by then you will have found your cause/problem/fix.
