If eng an onan P218 with sol mounted on starter motor, check that all connections tight on sol, jump across battery & starter terminals(large)on sol with a jumper cable or plier handles, starter motor should run,but not engage flywheel, with ign sw in off/stop position take a jumper from battery term on sol to coil term on sol,sol should energize, starter will spin & starter drive will engage flywheel cranking eng,if sol will not energize, then problem in same,if sol, starter work & crank eng then problem in safety sw's or ign sw on tractor. If eng has older style remote mounted sol(not mounted on starter)test as above, only difference is starter will engage & crank eng when jumpimg across or to coil terminal if sol good.I'm not sure if sol avail seperate if mounted on starter, most that I have seen are a unit & you have to buy together(EXPENSIVE-if you buy from a jd dealer)if you need a starter/sol,you might want to consider going to ebay & typeing john deere 318 starter or onan p218 starter in search & get a new/good used one.
