Check your valve clearances,same probably need an adjust,when clearance on same excessive valves close too early & acr not working,this causes starter to stall on compression stroke(a common problem on briggs eng) or you may have a leaking float valve in carb,flooding eng/piston at rest & hydro locking piston on compression stroke,let tractor sit overnight,next day remove spark plug,crank eng & see if any gas blown out plug hole,if so then float valve in carb leaking,you can sometimes pickup on this by an overfull oil level & the smell of gas in oil,if no flooding problem,valves need an adj,if you suspect a charging problem,connect a voltmeter to battery,try to start eng,watch meter,if voltage falls to 10.5v/lower then charging system not working or battery not holding charge,you can jump to battery from a car battery,if you do get running,battery voltage should slowly rise to 14.5v,with eng running full throttle,if you don't have the tools/mech & elect knowledge to work on eng/tractor call pro's at sears/local mower shop & let them repair or if you have some knowledge,either from local dealer,briggs website or ebay get yourself a briggs service manual pn 272147 ,this manual covers all 1 cyl ohv eng,will tell you how to set valves,troubleshoot charging system,service carb & anything else you need to know to work on eng.
