: I'm in the market for a new, or possibly used, lawn tractor. I have about 1.5 acres, mostly flat, that I need to mow. I've noticed that Sears has a 16hp Kohler-powered and a 16.5hp Briggs-powered lawn tractor on sale right now for about the same price, anyone out there willing to give me some advice as to the pros/cons of each? Also, is the $200 for an automatic tranmission worth it? Thanks in advance.

If you have 1 1/2 acres of grass to mow a 16hp Sears lawn tractor is to small. Its like shooting moose with a bb-gun if its the base ride-on it has a 42" deck. If you can swing an extra $800- the larger tuffer Garden Tractor will last years longer and they come with 46 or 50" decks. If anything get the Kohler engine with the oil filter it will out last the Briggs 2-1 and if its available the 10 amp charging system over the little 3 amp is a must have in my eyes. The 3 amp is to marginal not enought out put. You can spot the 10 amp system by the 2.5 x 2" silver rectifier with the 3 wire connector.
