In Reply to: Sears Craftsman 18hp Garden Tractor, are they good? posted by Bob Thompson on Wednesday, December 12, 2001:
: I'm considering purchasing a 3 year old Sears 18.5 hp Garden Tractor with a 46" mower deck. It has a twin cylinder Kohler engine and 6 speeds. Is this a good product? Any significant problems? Thanks in advance.
These are exl tractors the hi-lo 6 speed transmission is one of the tuffest on the market that trans is almost unchanged since the 60's. The Kohler twin has full pressure lubracation with a spin on oil filter. Just having that feature gives you 30% longer life, Engine also has electronic ignition and a 10 amp charging system. The opposed twin has been much better than their v-twin engine. Spent some time aligning the deck their almost always off and cocked at to much of an angle causing belt wear and throw off. The deck has 3 short blades I hardly ever see them get bent, Abors are completely rebuildable. With a 3 year old tractor you should be able to get it for half/price. How do I know so much? I work for Sears full time fixing these.
