I'm not familiar with that mod trimmer eng, however most 2 stroke eng used in trimmers, blowers etc suffer from several common problems,if you haven't done so already try testing ign with a new plug, old plug may be fouled/shorted out,if no spark with new plug, remove recoil starter/flywheel cover, grab flywheel & try to rock same to all four points of the compass, check for any slop/sideplay or any type of movement in flywheel, most low end trimmers/blowers(consumer units)use roller/needle bearings, after a few yrs use these bearings wear/get blown out, this affects flywheel/coil air gap on compression stroke as crank shifts & causes hard starting/no spark,if bearings tight & no play, remove ign coil, take same to local mower, most shops have coil tester & may be able to test for you, coil may be bad, also while there ask them as to correct flywheel/coil air gap.IF trimmer extremely old(20 yrs+)check for points/condenser under flywheel, either both may be dirty/bad,if point type ign, you'll have a wire going fom coil to under flywheel
