We are making the same decision between a ZTR and a ride on. We have 1.5 ares of undulating land with a number of trees and other obstacles to mow around in a sub-tropical part of Australia so no need for working with snow as well.
I understand the ZTR machines to save time in turning around and mowing around trees etc rather than higher speed on the flats. The Toro site has a small section on this.
The decision criteria for me are whether they are likely to be as reliable as the lawn tractors and is the extra cost justified. I am still trying to get answers to these.
I put a question on the gardenweb forum and one guy came back with a good report on the Dixie Choppers. They aren't available in Australia but look pretty good so you might want to check them out if you haven't already.
Regards
Paul
