If you follow the red cable from the battery, it
leads to a device called a solenoid. It attaches
to one large post on this solenoid, and another
large wire is on the other large post of the
solenoid that goes to the starter. It is
essentially a large switch or relay. When you turn the key, it sends voltage to the solenoid
to connect the wire from the battery to the one
to the starter, thus cranking the engine. So on
the terminal of the solenoid that the battery
side cable is attached there should be a small
wire attached. This wire goes in a roundabout way
to the keyswitch, then from the keyswitch comes
another wire to a terminal on the bottom of the
solenoid, this is the path that sends current to
engage the solenoid. If you could follow this wire, you would likely find an in-line fuse, that
may be blown. Next you will go through safetey
switches that must be pressed or released to
allow current to pass, these are another problem
area. Look for disconnected wires, broken or
burnt switches, or buttons not getting pushed
all of the way. There are switches on the seat,
blade engage, clutch pedal, shifter. Look at
these areas first, as well as cleaning and
tightening cables and connections first. If this
doesn't resolve your problem, then you will have
to troubleshoot, but check these first and let me
know what you find.
