troy unless your just looking for project to do this winter,my advise would be to replace the engine.not sure what you have tecumseh or kohler.check the throttle shaft for play also before starting it may be wore to much.we have replaced many this year rather then rebuild much, cheaper and better i think.i replaced them with an engine called Yamakoyo and have not had a problem.
i think habor freight has an engine that is as good called greyhound.good luck
