The first thing I would check is the battery cables. Is the negative cable tight on the battery? is the other end connected clean and tight to the frame or engine block? Cables are corrosion free? Not sure if I understand if it turns over or not. Have yopu replaced the points and condensor recently? A bad condensor will kill the starting system. New points and condensor should cost less than $20 and I'd spend that before buying a coil.
