assuming the charging system and hasn't let the battery drain down, it sounds like either the solenoid, on the starter, is weak or the bendix in the starter is hanging up
if it's the bendix, sometimes tapping (not hard) with a hammer on the end of the start will jog it loose - that's not a permanent repair but if that works then you know it's the bendix
the solenoid, if it's weak will also give a clicking sound, ie bendix is trying to engage but solenoid is not holding current to the starter
try shorting across the two large lugs on the solenoid with a heavy gauge wire or even a screw driver if you can get it to reach both lugs - if engine spins, then you know solenoid is weak
i don't know pricing on your solenoid, but a common cheap shortcut is to buy a ford solenoid at trak auto for $7 - 8 - it'll be obvious how to connect it - just make sure it is bolted to the frame or engine where it will have a good ground
