might try getting the engine's number off it's ID plate and going to the Briggs webpage to hunt down a procedure for valve adjustment... some of the briggs engines need that done every so often.
but, cuppla other simple things - make sure that fuel filter isn't installed backwards; the fuel tank cap vent is clear; fuel lines not soft/collapsing when hot.
