I looked at pic's of tractor & it looks good, maybe too good,1st question that comes to mind-if it's that good, why are they selling it?looking at background in pic's looks like it was used on large mowing area, depending on yr of mower same be starting to get tired in eng or in mech parts on tractor, this is something you should explore before before jumping at it,considering you can get a new poulan(built by ayp, same comp that builds sears tractors)from home depot for $979 & it has a guarantee, the murray bought "as is" also briggs now owns murrary & is not that supportive on parts as some people have mentioned before,as far as your eng, question is -Who is going to repair eng,you or shop?if eng needs a rebore & new piston/ring set plus any other parts & gaskets,a shop would probably go a new short block or complete eng route + labor(either quote or per hr most shops in my area getting $75-$90 hr)if you do it,at very least you'll have to disassemble eng, take block to a machine shop & have cyl bore measured for os piston/ring set needed, rebore $50/$70,new piston $50/$70 depending on os needed plus any other parts needed & gasket set, disassembly, rebore, reassembly time frame & cost of parts are what you'll have to decide if you want to go time/money.Before taking to shop or pulling head, check a couple of things, check that oil not overfull, briggs ohv eng very sensitive to this, especially on a grade, will blow excess oil out breather into carb depending if breather on low side, also check that breather valve not stuck open(follow hose back from carb to find, remove valve from eng & check that disk on back works freely & clean, free of carbon, crud)check valve clearances, you might be mistakeing valve tap for a knock, none of the above will cure your oil burning problem, but may get you out of the woods for time being as far as heavy smokeing
