First thing check that valve cover isn't leaking & dripping oil on muffler, after that check all the way around where head meets block, look for oil leakage, this would indicate a blown/leaking head gasket(both common problem on many 12-16 hp briggs)if head gasket bad you may hear a chugging sound at low speed with load on eng, also check valve clearances intake .003-.005",exh .005-.007",as far as knock it may be something internal, worn rings/rod,bearings etc,eng would have to be torn down to check this, remove air filter, check for for oil in air filter assembly, this would indicate blow/leaking head gasket or blow-by caused by worn piston/rings
