I was once a JD service manager with quite a bit of experience with the 317 tractors and Kohler engines. Other than a recall from a batch of bad connecting rods in the early 80's, Kohler builds a great engine. JD even replaced the engines free of charge when they found the problem. Chances are, any one you would look at today has the good rods in it already.
