Joe, those ball joints are worn. The tractor is I think a 1985-87 model, #9172559105. But now, it has evolved to the point that the steering assembly just clicks when I try to turn in either direction. The teeth on the small round "pinion gear" part #102458x that is at the end of the steering shaft, and the v shaped gear, part #120424x, look pretty good to the untrained eye, but they just jump teeth when I try to turn either way now.
I can no longer buy the steering shaft, that has one of the steering gears on it, but I can buy the sector. I guess I am going to order the sector, the plastic bushings and the ball joints and see if that solves my problems. This old tractor runs too good to part out!
I appreciate your help and any further ideas!
