There should be a replacement belt installation procedure in your tractor's owners manual. If you don't have it, get the model number off the machine's ID plate (usually under the tilting seat) - go to the MTD website and follow their links for downloadable manuals.
Also usually advisable to use only OEM replacement belts for those variable speed drives - and in sets if several belts involved - generic aftermarket belts haven't seem to have worked that well.
