Craftsman tractor will not turn left!

I have a Sears Garden Tractor #917273021
Something is wrong with the steering. When I try to turn left, the steering pops and the wheels do not turn leaft, but turning right works fine.
Looking at the steering gear, I really do not see an obvious problem. There is a good bit of play in the steering wheel, but I have nothing to compare it to.
I'd really appreciate your help!
