First thing right off - take that tracor battery to a shop that can load test it. Batteries going into failure can do just what you are describing.and a simple voltage chk by you with a VOM will only reflect the existing "surface" charge of mebbe 12+ volts.
If that;s OK, then chk starter and pinion to be good. If still OK, check engine to see if it is getting hydrolocked from raw gas flooding thru carb. (Tipoff there can be smelling gas in your engine's oil).
Lastly, look at engine mechanics, including ACR.
