I have an older B & S horiz. 5 HP, with a vacuum/diaphram type carb. The only way I can start it, is by spraying a little starting fluid down the carb. It seems to run ok after it starts but I have to set the idle up pretty high. It acts like it has a vacuum leak. I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it out ( it wasn't dirty) and replaced the rubber diaphram. The little metal cover over the diaphram was warped, so I filed it flat, but to no avail. I have another engine that has the same carb and the same problem. The local repair shop says "we just put on a new carb. when we have that problem." I have rebuilt many carbs, including motorcycle and car, and have never had a problem I couldn't fix, but this one has me baffled. Anyone have an idea on what to try? If I can't fix it, my next move will be to replace the carb with a float bowl type, if I can find one. Or perhaps a carb from something else can be modified to fit.
