yup, prob as you describe can/does happen in L&G tractors.
CC did offer a service manual on the 1000 series.. go to their website, enter your full model # and serial # (found under your tilting seat)on the request for manual link page and if still there, d/l the service manual section on steering. It will show you how to with supporting pixs. Only one thing - if either your small gear or your larger sector gear are damaged/worn, best to replace both with a new set at the same time. I don't think you will find any sort of mesh adjustment.Make sure your strg shaft bushings are OK.
Also check the rest of your linkage.. and make sure you have correctly greased the front axle and spindles. Using the tractor w/o those areas being well greased can quickly put premature wear on the steering box...
