If it's a hydro, there is an external retaining ring, similar in shape to a washer, that is split with a tab on either side of the split. Each tab has a small round hole. You would need a pair of external snap ring pliers to remove. Insert the two prongs of the pliers into the two holes and as you increase your grip, the external retaining ring is expanded so you can easily remove it off the end of the saft.
If it's a gear, it could have the external retaining ring, or it could have an e-clip retaining ring. The e-clip again is somewhat similar to a washer, but has a larger gap and looks sort of like an "e", but more like a "c". You would use a pair of e-clip pliers to engage and remove. You can sometimes carefully use a punch and tap with a hammer to dislodge the e-clip retaining ring. However, more often than not, this usually ends up to no avail or sends the e-clip sailing off, never to be found.
