craftsman 16.5 hp....starter clicking

I have a model 917.271120 craftsman 16.5 hp 42" mower....
I turn the key, and it just clicks...
battery is charged, has gas....
When I hook up the starter to jumper cables it spins the engine fine... but I can't get any spark at the plug.
What is the next troubleshooting step I need to look at?
