Locate & disconnect ign kill from eng to ign sw,crank eng,if you have spark, then problem in safety sw's on tractor,if still no spark then problem on eng, briggs used different types of solid state ign on these eng,one was solid state powered by flywheel magnets, other was a solid state with a trigger module that was powered off a tri alt, there is a seperate winding on alt winding to power trigger module, twin cyl eng also had 2 diodes in kill lead connecting to wiring harness going to ign sw,if 1 or both diodes go bad you will loose ign, charging diode getting hot could also be related to a alt stator,as you may have a shot between windings or a shorted inline diode, causing AC to be put into battery. What you need is a briggs service/repair manual that covers your eng, same will help you id alt system & ign system, also how test & repair same, manuals are usually avail at local mower dealer, briggs website,amazon.com or ebay.
