I have a Sears Craftsman II Garden tractor with a 18 hp Briggs & Stratton Engine (model# 422707) that has no spark. I have cleaned all connections between battery & engine. Engine now cranks okay but will not start, as there is no spark. Is this engine equipped with 12 volt coil or a magneto? What is the trigger? The former owner says battery was bad (missing and the alternator is bad, could this be the trigger for the ignition system?
The diode in the wiring harness also gets hot to the touch after a short period of time with the key on, could this be a issue with the alternator?
any assistance would be helpful
