The air gap of the clutch has no relationship to current draw. The same amount of draw occurs regardless.
bontai joe is right about the gap. It is a wonder it is working. When you apply 12v to the clutch it pulls it in, but it only has a relatively small amount of travel. If the gap is bigger than the distance travel, than it cant clamp the clutch plate.
If you fix the air gap, then charge the batttery, you will be able to mow with it properly until there is not enough power in the battery to physically pull in the clutch, but by then you won't be able to restart the mower most likely ecause of the low battery.
