Personally, I pull the deck and use a blade lock to hold the blade while removing or installing. (It's less than $10 and well worth the price in skinned knuckles alone). If you've never seen one, here's a reference (about 1/3 the way down the page)

While the deck is off, I check the springs, belts and pulleys. Also lube all moving parts and clean the underside with a putty knife. Whole job takes about two beers (three on a hot day).
