: : Marc,
: Your plans for the present and future should get you thinking "garden" tractor, not "lawn" tractor. Don't neglect Kubota. A productive, trouble-free life for their machines is 20+ years.
: Think "more" rather than "less" tractor when you make your decision.

Marc:
I agree with the above comments. It seems to me that you are describing two very different situations and I would tend to treat them as such. For the time being a relatively small "lawn tractor" may be adequate. If and when you move to a larger property then upgrade to a compact tractor.

I have been through a similar situation. I had a Snapper 1855 which I used for mowing and snowblowing. It wasn't very nimble for cutting grass and even with a cab, it wasn't great for blowing snow - single-stage snow blower and no heater in the cab. I never tried using it in the bush because it wasn't powerful enough, wasn't manoeuverable enough and didn't have enough traction for my hilly terrain. My neighbour has a Kubota B6100 which is both powerful enough and has four wheel drive but isn't sufficiently manouevable to be useful in the bush.

I solved my problem by getting rid of the Snapper and buying a well-used (over 5000 hours) Kubota F2400. This is a front mount machine and came with a 60" mower deck, a 50" two-stage snowblower (hydraulic chute direction and discharge deflector) and a 50" dozer blade. This machine used to belong to a municipality and it came with a metal and glass cab with a heater - a major bonus. The machine needed some TLC but it still works very well - I have had no major problems with it. I take the cab off during the summer. The Kubota takes care of mowing and snowblowing but it would be useless for bush work. So I bought a Bombardier Traxter ATV and use it in the bush and well as for yard work. This works very well. I chose the Traxter so a number or reasons: shaft drive - no belts, electric shift, park setting in the transmission so I don't have to rely on brakes for parking on hills, four wheel drive on demand rather than full time, rear mounted radiator to avoid damage when crashing through the bush, and step through which makes mounting and dismounting easier especially for us old guys.

This is a more costly solution than you were considering and it may not suit your situation but it is something to think about.
