Remove the sparkplug, insert a wooden dowel rod threw the sparkplug hole to use as an index or guide as to the location of the piston position. slowly rotate the flywheel by hand, NOT WITH THE STARTER, making sure you are top dead center with both valves in the closed posisition. To be extremely accurate you wwould need a dial indicator and plug hole adapter. Then you could get down to specifics on thousands of an inch increments before and after top dead center. But you can set them just fine with the dowel rod method.
