I personally would go with the craftsman over the MTD/Troy Built. Especially if the troy built has the "automatic" transaxle (variator pulley/belt drive) as opposed to a true hydrostatic transaxle. Craftman/AYP, LT's/GT's are a knotch above MTD as far as quality goes. The only MTD LT/GT I'd buy/recommend is cub cadet. I have an yard machines 600 series 17hp/42" with the variator drive. Pure junk, but it was cheap!!! until I can afford something better...
