The four wheel drive has gears between front an back axle to drive the correct size height (circumference)of tyres. If you dont match the correct size tyres to front and back (ie putting a bigger height tyre on the back than specified) the rear axle will try to go faster than the front causing the transmission to wind up. Not a problem in mud because the tyres can slip. In the dry with good traction however the gears will not be able to slip and the gears will wind up getting tighter and tighter till something gives - normally teeth on the gear strip. There is a tolerance in sizes you can go to but anything radically different will cause the transmission to wind up and possibly blow the gears.
