4wd is not needed on pavement and maybe harmfull to the drive train. There is a lever to engage and disengage the 4wd front end. Assuming you do not have a manual, and the original owner can't tell you, check the levers on either side of the transmission, near either side of the seat or under seat area either side of transmission.
