You are right the Pto has 2 positions, one 540rpm the other 800rpm, most equipment uses 540, you don't want to overspeed anything. The low range lever is on the left side of the transmission/rear end area under the seat with a red tipped handle I believe. It is not meant to be shifted on the go, stop first.
