Thanks Farmn & Rick
After the valve set, the noise is still there, the shop thought it might be a bad injector or worst (piston) in the #1 cylinder (closest the the sheering wheel), but they needed to do a compression test to determine. Hoping it is an injector,is that something I could do myself (as Farmm suggested) rather than take the tractor in, is it something a so-so weekend mechanic should try? and how would I go about it? Note the tractor seams to be smoking continuously (whitest blue smoke)now after the valve set, before only at start up then it would quit. Prior to having the tech look at the tractor I did drain and put clean fuel and installed a new filter. (the comment about the oil leak well I was told this by the tech prior to seeing want he was talking about, to me there is no evidence of an oil leak that I can see, I think it was him blowing smoke then, because I couldn't start the tractor to see the leak and apparently they did not hook the decompression cable right and the tractor would not start for me so they came out and corrected their error, so yes I lost my confidence in that shop)Another shop did say the compression test was NOT the way to go but rather another way of checking if there was any blow by the seal? not sure how they were doing that. I did try as suggested by the second shop to add a cap full of "total diesel " conditioner to the fuel to see if that might clean the injectors but the full tank would have to used to see any improved effects. Your comments please, where do I go from here?
