Vehicles from 1966 down to the early days was
rated from the fly wheel with no fan belt pulling anything, they got the most top hp. The
government got involved around 1966 or 67 and
the rating then had to be rated from the rear
wheels with all belts and other items that used
hp. This gave the true usable hp. Tractors are
about the same way. A...i'll have to say machine
because I forgot the name of it, is used to
connect to the pto on a tractor and the hp is
rated by setting the engine speed to 2500 rpm
or about, and then the pto hp is rated with this
machine by applying a brake untill the engine
stalls, then it's read for pto hp. The engine
hp will be higher than PTO hp. However if you
have a 50 engine hp tractor, that 50 hp would
be at the highest engine rpm. If your running
the engine at 1800 rpm your developing much less
hp. The slower you run the engine the less hp
is developed. The thing to remember is hp is
not what does the work, You want to look at
the foot lbs of torque developed, That is
where you get your work power. I've seen engines
that develop 250 hp, but only developed 150 ft
lbs torque. Then i've seen engines develop 225
hp but churned out 190 ft lbs torque, The 225
hp at 190 ft lbs of torque will out perform
the higher hp engine.
Hope I haven't confused you and maybe
this will help.
