If it is steering box play, adjust as necessary and maybe do what many old Farmall users have done with their tractors, use pump grease instead of gear oil in the steering box to smoothen and tighten things up. The adjustment should put you in range of about 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch play at the steering wheel edge. At least my tractor of similar vintage tightened up nicely at this measurement.
