Hours, I think under good maintenance up to 3000 hrs is possible before overhaul, if abused less than that from what I heard. But at 50-100 hours a year it may take years to accumulate many hours. As far as a thermostat, does it have a water pump? some engines did not and they did not use a thermostat, it cooled by thermo syphon(or something like that) , hot water rises and is cooled by the fan and recirculates. Only fill radiator just above radiator fins, anything more it will spit out but does not mean it is overheating. If yours has a water pump and thermostat then remove thermostat first and read the numbers on it to find a replacement.
