The white smoke, sounds like too much fuel.
kinda like when a carb was flooding a little
on an old car. Could be your injectors are
dirty at the tips causing fuel problems. If
the filter is letting in air in a small amount
it would be running lean, and finally stop running because of the system being full of air.
It may be a cheep fix to replace the fuel filter, and see if you can find some injector
cleaner for diesel.( NOT GASOLINE ENGINE ).
An old trick we did in the shop when we changed
the fuel filters on the diesel trucks, was we
filled the filter with automatic tranny fluid
instead of diesel. This fluid will help clean
the injectors, and not have very much to burn.
the engine will start and run on ATF just fine.
Don't know if a filter full of ATF would be
enough to do any good at this point.
Just a big guess here.
