A friend of mine gave me an 20-year old L2050 (small 3-cylinder engine) because it was overheating and he hadn't used it much in the recent years.
I first flushed out the radiator with cleaner/flusher, which did not work. I also changed the oil and filter. It overheated in about 20 or 30 minutes (effectively no change).
Then I replaced the thermostat and again no change.
On this tractor there are no gauges, except for hours and fuel. It does have an oil light and a charge light.
As I used the tractor, I noticed that once it overheads (obvious because of fluid coming from overflow hose) the gasket between the transmission and block leaks *at the top*. When it's cool, it doesn't leak.
So, after the thermo replacement, I thought I'd check the oil level since I knew what it was before I began. To my surprise, the oil was effectively under high pressue. The oil was coming out of the dipstick hole, which of course it should not. Since I knew the level was at normal and therefore well below the dipstick hole and because of the leak at the top of the block/transmission, I concluded that the oil pressue is higher than it should be.
I do a lot of work on gasoline engines, but never on a diesel. After reading some of the overheating posts, I noticed that the water pump could fail without leaks and without bearing noise.
Other than starting there, what other things should I consider (oil pump, clogged oil ports)?
Would an oil problem cause the water to overheat?
Thanks in advance,
Larry
