Just saw your post - hopefully you've got it off by now. If not, you could try prying it while tapping it with a hammer. Alternatively, if you can swing the shaft out of the way, you could borrow a gear puller and try that. If it still won't budge, we're down to heat - I'd try mapp gas & heat it for 3 mins. or so. (Be careful). You're right not to use too much force on it as the seal might not forgive you. Good luck.
