Never heard of a filter causing one to run
lean, but have heard of a half cloged filter
starving the engine for fuel and it would
be sluggish or shut down. The best way I know
to ck the thermostat is to remove it, by then
you may as well install a new one, but flush
out the system first with the thermostat out.
To check the coolant flow, I always had the
radiator almost full, low enough to see the
movement, cap off, let it run to normal temp
and watch the flow in the radiator. Could be
a better way, but we get our own ideas I guess.
I've never had a rusted cooling system on any
of my engines, I always made sure the coolant
was correct. RUST could be a problem.
