Jim,
as you figured out a diesel will run as long as it has compression and fuel,the battery only serves to start the engine.
on older tractors it was a simple matter of reducing throttle till no fuel (mechanical cut off like my b7100)
alot of the newer tractors will have a electrical cut off, sounds like yours is out,
I do not believe the seat saftey switch could possibly cause your problem, although it was wet and you dried it, the purpose it serves is to shut down the engine if the seat is vacated, or prevent starting the engine if the seat is vacant it would have no affect on you being in the seat and trying to shut down the engine.
It sounds like your fuel solonoid switch may be on the fritz.
