You are on the right track, but my manual does not have the electric schematic for that model,
that final fry could have been a fuseable link going when which ever relay was going bad finally bit the bullet,
based on your description sounds like the first one by its self is the glow plug relay,
can you tell what color the wire is at the starter and then look at the wiring on the relays and make a match, that may be the starting switch relay, which could be the culprit since you can jump across the solenoid and the starter works.
maybe someone else will have a schematic to send you.
