Having worked on Hydrostatic Transmissions for a living I can tell you that this sounds like a classic case of a Hydrostat that is starting to fail. To save yourself money, have the thing rebuilt before you damage the plates, pistons and cylinder blocks of the transmission any further. That is if the hydro on your tractor is one of the rebuildable breed. If it is a Sundstrand most likely it can be rebuilt.
