Check your trans sheave,is it alum or steel,if alum u need to change it,u will have to remove the fenders to change, when adjusting the belt tension, the funny looking arm on the left of the mower that slides in the slot, the round rod aligns with a mark stamped in the arm with the brake relased.A worn alum trans sheave will break the rod and slotted arm,due to belt vibration.
About the white smoke, sounds like u have water leaking into a cyl, check by removing a plug just after startup, kill the eng while still smoking, the cyl that has water in it will have a wet sparkplug. Are u having to add to the water bottle, have u noticed water between the exh pipes on the frame?
Good luck,Brad.
