Hey GB,look at the left rear of the engine blower housing as setting in the seat. There is a little box with 3 wires, the terminals are marked AC+ B+ AC+,the 2 AC+ terms are ac voltage coming from the stator coil(generator)the box is the voltage regulator, the B+ term is 12V to charge the battery.
Take a volt meter set at ac volts and touch both ac+ terms with the engine running wide open, should read between 28-32 volts ac.
Switch the voltmeter to dc touch the black to ground and the red to the B+ term,u should have between 12.75vdc-16vdc.
If all this tests fine, then remove the blower housing, and the flywheel, the Kohler command singles are bad about the magnets turning loose.
About disconnecting the batt and engine stopping, these engines are equipped with a mag type setup, they will not go dead until u ground the coil. The only way it would go dead is if the carb had a fuel shutoff solenoid mounted on it,it has to have 12v to stay open.
The blades kick out due to low volt/amps from the battery.
Your deck color is black, isn't it?
Post back if u need more help.
Later,Brad.
