This problem could either be the trans being shot... OR it could simply be the cooling fan on top of the trans. Mine makes the same noise, now, and I had it looked at and they told me that the hub for the fan wears out and starts to screech. Simply replacing the fan (and hub, which is included) will fix the problem.
You can see the fan if you look past the top of the right rear tire... it's kinda hard to see. To get at it, remove the seat, and unbolt all the necessary bolts to lift the back sheetmetal off the tractor. Then you can look right down at the fan.
